Our History
Ayers St. church of Christ

Here we tell the story of the beginnings of our congregation in Corpus Christi, and how we became what we are today.

None here today can recall the events in November, 1898, when a small group of Christians gathered in Corpus Christi, determined to establish a congregation of the Lord's church in this community. From its meager beginning has grown the many churches now well established in our area, and more directly, the Ayers St. congregation.

For many years after that eventful day in 1898, all services and gatherings were held in homes. The first permanent meeting place of the church was a small building located on Leopard St. By 1907, the location was moved to a lot at Staples and Furman Ave. The church continued to grow and, in 1934, another group was formed and started meeting in a frame "tabernacle" located at King and Coleman streets. This marked the beginning of the Central church of Christ, which later was changed to the Ayers St. church of Christ.

In 1942, we started worshipping at our current location, at the corner of Ayers & Lawnview. The church has gone through many changes from that time to the present, but gratefully it can be said faithful Christians still worship and serve the Lord from this location.

As stated earlier, the roots of the Christian group who met in 1898 have scattered in many directions. But the efforts of those who are part of the Ayers St. congregation still hold true to the vision of those who began this work so long ago, to be New Testament Christians. We seek to be nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. You are invited to come and see what being a New Testament Christian in the 21st century is all about.
